About us :: West Alness Residents Association

Alness is one of the largest towns in the Scottish Highlands and Islands region, and West Alness Residents Association (WARA) was established almost 30 years ago to provide 1000 local households with a representative body which could speak on their behalf to local authorities and other agencies. A few years after its formation, Highland Council offered WARA the lease to two shop units in an area which is associated with high rates of unemployment, violence, crime, housing problems and teenage pregnancy.

These units became the West End Community Centre, initially used for typical community activities such as OAP lunch clubs and art & drama classes. A recent refurbishment project, and the addition of a third adjacent shop unit was undertaken by the Residents Association and the community has now gained:
 

• a modern, accessible facility
• a new youth café and music suite
• a fully equipped computer suite with up to date IT equipment and software
  
• a venue for family celebrations and
• provision of new volunteering and lifelong learning opportunities

the committee of volunteers who manage the Community Centre are all local residents, and the ages of members span from sixteen years to seventy!
